Back-to-Back Brilliance! Congratulations to Our 2025 Pro Drive Hamilton Waikato Men’s Masters Champion – Ben Westgate

What a spectacular day it was for the 2025 Pro Drive Hamilton Waikato Men’s Masters, hosted at the picturesque Waikare Golf Club. We’re thrilled to congratulate Ben Westgate, from Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club, who has done it again — successfully defending his title and securing back-to-back wins as our Men’s Masters Champion! A tremendous achievement and a testament to his consistency and class under pressure.

Ben opened his day with a solid 69 (-1) in the morning round — a respectable score, but with the bar set high by others in the field, he knew he’d need to turn up the heat in the afternoon. And that’s exactly what he did. Delivering a composed and clinical performance, Ben carded a superb 68 (-2) in the second round, giving him a two-round total of 137 (-3) to take the title with a 4-shot victory.

A tight battle played out behind him, with Blair Clark and Stuart Baird finishing tied for second on 141, with Blair claiming runner-up on countback. Stuart, who had fired a phenomenal 65 (-5) in the morning to lead all scorers, rounded out the top three — a fantastic effort by all.

The day began with a definite chill in the air — and more than a few fingers crossed that a frost delay wouldn’t hold us up. Thankfully, the weather played nice, and the full field was off promptly at 7:45am for a shotgun start. As the morning progressed, the sun broke through and warmed up not just the air but the atmosphere — setting the stage for an incredible day of golf.

Players grabbed a quick bite during the lunch break (big thanks to the new caterers for keeping everyone well fed!), and although our 12:30pm start was slightly delayed, everyone was back out and underway by 1:00pm for round two. The afternoon ran like clockwork, with smooth pace of play and all groups finishing by 4:45pm — a great result for a 36-hole day.

Special thanks are due to the amazing team at Waikare Golf Club, whose efforts made the day truly memorable:

  • To the club staff, who opened the doors bright and early at 6:00am and had the fireplace crackling — a small touch that meant a lot.

  • To the greens staff, for presenting the course in immaculate condition — fast greens, clean fairways.

  • To the new catering team, whose delicious lunches and after-golf platters were a massive hit with players.

  • And of course, to Kathleen and Christine, who kept the refreshments flowing at the bar and brought smiles all around.

To all the players who travelled near and far to be part of this event — thank you. Your energy, spirit, and sportsmanship are what make the Waikato Men’s Masters such a standout on the calendar. We truly hope you enjoyed the experience and look forward to seeing you all again in 2026 for another fantastic edition.

Until next time — keep swinging, stay sharp, and thank you for being part of something special.

Congratulations to our 2024 Waikato Masters Champion Ben Westgate ( Royal Auckland and the Grange Golf Club ) for his superb win at the very challenging Waikare Golf Club on Saturday 3rd August.

The players were greeted with a chilly morning with light winds and some very tricky pin placements when they arrived for the 7.45am shotgun start. Scott Thrupp ( Royal Auckland and the Grange Golf Club ) lead the morning field with a great 69 to be 1 shot ahead of defending champion Stephen Sandford's ( Pirongia Golf Club ) 70 and Ben Westgate and Andrew Morgan ( Hamilton Golf Club ) in 3rd with 72's.

With a change of pins to more favorable positions for the afternoon round it was all Ben Westgate as he stormed around the course in a superb 65 to win by 3 shots over Stephen Sandford who shot another 70, with Scott Thrupp next and Andrew Morgan rounding out the top 4.

A big thank you to the Waikare Golf Club for having the course in fantastic conditions and the team at Waikato Golf for running another exciting Waikato Masters.

A stunning day at Waikare Golf Club for the 2023 Waikato Men's Masters Championship!  A boomer day with weather fit for short sleeves and bare legs!

This year the format was a shotgun start at 7:45 am for round 1 of the 36-hole event. It was well received and it is very likely that we'll continue with this format.

Stephen Sandford from Pirongia Golf Club AND who also happens to work as the Golf Develpment Officer at Waikato Golf Association, took out the best gross scores of the day with solid rounds of 72, 71 for a total of 143 overall.  The Winners Tray already has pride of place here in the WGA offices.  The next best gross was Scott Thrupp from RAGGC with a 145 combined score.  Michael Bone, from Waitakere was this years Nett winner with scores of 71, 68 for a score of 139!  The 2nd place Nett with a combined score of 147 was Corey Natusch from Horsham Downs.  Well done and congratulatons to you all!

Many thanks to the crew at Waikare Golf Club for once again showing us the best possible hospitality!  Sharleen Fah, who has recently left her post as the manager, will be missed greatly by the WGA Team!  We wish her and her lovely familty all the best with her future endeavours.  Thank you to Christine Willats for her early arrival, printing of scorecards, running the bar and all the other jobs you performed!  You're a champion!   Our compliments also to Shelly, the caterer, for dishing out some delicious viddles! A big thank you to the Board Members that were onsite to make sure the day ran smoothly and provided VIP parking for the WGA staff!   Another huge thanks to the greens staff for having those greens in mint condition!  The player comments were overwhelminly positive!  We are already looking forward to the 2024 Waikato Men's Masters Champioship!  See you again soon!

Waikato Golf Team,

Terry, Dana and Stephen
